Interstellar Stitch Workshop with Escape Threads

August 23 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Explore NLM’s current exhibit SPACELAB: An Interstellar Exhibit of Glass Art and be inspired to design your own otherworldly creation in this hands-on workshop. Philadelphia-based artist Danielle Conyers of Escape Threads will lead an embroidery workshop to create a one-of-a-kind, hand-sewn pulsar map on a wood hoop canvas. The design interprets a pulsar map, the first message launched into outer space aboard the Pioneer 10 spacecraft. Originally designed by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake, the map depicts the relative location of our sun based on the known location of certain stars to guide extraterrestrial life to make contact with Earth.

Get exclusive, after-hours access to the SPACELAB gallery to view the artwork and then choose how to express your embroidered pulsar map with different colors and patterns. Danielle will teach a series of basic stitching techniques so you can design your own map. No previous stitching knowledge is necessary and all experience levels are welcome.* This workshop is BYOB! Bring your friends and your favorite drink. All embroidery materials are included. Tickets are $25, NLM Members are $15.

*This workshop is designed for adults and young adults ages 16 and up.

ABOUT ESCAPE THREADS
Escape Threads is the creation of Philadelphia-based artist Danielle Conyers. Growing up in Southwest Florida, with a national park practically in her backyard, gave her a strong sense of respect and love for nature and the outdoors. Being able to escape and find solace outside was something she always cherished. It was in these little moments that she was able to reflect and find inspiration. Her relationship with the nature became a major influence in her foray into fiber work. Each hand-sewn piece is inspired by the natural world and the adventurous spirit of the outdoors.
