The Best Philadelphia Museums for Kids Are Great for Adults Too
When you think about an outing for the kids, you probably don’t think you will have much to look forward to yourself. But the ideals that we champion at the National Liberty Museum appeal to all ages, and the exciting exhibitions and programs we host are designed to communicate the values of liberty and free expression clearly and without bias. So, next time you’re looking for a valuable experience to share with your children, the National Liberty Museum (NLM) is the perfect Philadelphia museum for kids and adults alike.
Our Purpose: A Torch-Bearer for Liberty
The power—and the challenge—of liberty is worth preserving. As soon as you enter the NLM, you are greeted with our Welcome Gallery and replica Liberty Bell to set the stage for the rest of your visit. As you continue on to our Flame Gallery, you will explore the ideal of liberty around the Flame of Liberty, a glass sculpture by acclaimed artist Dale Chihuly. Sure to enchant young ones with its breathtaking beauty and magnitude, it will also provide food for thought and discussion among teens and parents.
Our History: Heroes from Around the World
Next, your family can move upstairs to our Heroes of Liberty from Around the World exhibition, where we’ve collected stories from history on figures who fought for freedom and sought to expand the rights we hold dear. Adults can explore the extraordinary individuals highlighted along the walls, while children can be drawn in by the dioramas of scenes that demonstrate the struggles and triumphs of liberty.
Our Exhibitions: Communicating Ideas
Another aspect that makes the National Liberty Museum a great Philadelphia museum for kids is our rotating exhibitions. Right now, we are in the midst of the Year of Free Speech, comprised of three exhibitions: Free Speech: Our Right, Our Responsibility, Word Powered: Exploring Free Speech Through Art, and Let’s Talk: Confronting What Divides Us. This slate of exhibitions presents the perfect opportunity for young people to explore the fundamental right of free speech in an engaging, immersive, and interactive setting.
Adults and children alike can enjoy the beautiful and thought-provoking art on display in Word Powered, while the polarizing topics explored in Free Speech: Our right, Our Responsibility can provide a jumping-off point for important family discussions. Let’s Talk is built to encourage open discussion and the discovery of common ground—a valuable experience for visitors of any age.
Our Tours: Guided Visit Opportunities
If you want to make sure you get the full NLM experience, then set up a guided tour for your family. Not only can you experience all that we have to offer, but you have the expertise of our Museum Educators to help you dive deeper into the content, concepts, and themes of our featured exhibitions. All group tours must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance, so submit your request here to get ready.
