Carpentars’ Hall Recovery Benefit and VIP Access: Past Tense – Turning to History in Uncertain Times

Carpentars’ Hall Recovery Benefit and VIP Access: Past Tense – Turning to History in Uncertain Times

In partnership with Carpenters’ Hall, NLM is proud to host this topical conversation about the power of history.

NLM brings together a panel featuring Michael Idriss, African American Interpretive Fellow at Museum of the American Revolution; Don Wildman, host of Travel Channel’s Mysteries at the Museum and the podcast American History Hit; and Jonathan Zimmerman, Professor of History of Education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, in a discussion examining the complex power that history holds over the future, and what’s at stake in the battles we wage over interpretations of the past in our museums, our classrooms, and on our screens.

VIP ticket holders are invited to join a pre-event reception with sales benefitting the Carpenters’ Hall Recovery Fund. Tickets include an exclusive cocktail reception with hosts and panelists, with remarks from Don Wildman.

VIP Event 5:30-6:30 pm

Panel Discussion 6:30-7:30 pm

About Carpenters’ Hall Recovery

Located in Independence National Historical Park and a National Historic Landmark, Carpenters’ Hall was built in the early 1770s and hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, one of the most significant events in the founding of our nation. On Christmas Eve 2022, Carpenters’ Hall was broken into and a fire was started in the basement. The fire came at the end of a once-in-a-generation preservation project, and after eight months of closure, the Hall was set to reopen in February.

While the fire was thankfully contained in the basement, the basement and its contents suffered extensive damage in the flames. As they navigate the damage and explore a new path to reopening, we are asking the public to support them in our efforts. While insurance will cover much of the destruction, Carpenters’ Hall will need to commit to new improvements to prevent another tragedy from occurring again in the future. Public donations will help to fund an improved security system, including new security cameras, fire protection systems, fireproof archival storage, and environmental protections for our collections.
