On Friday, February 16, the National Liberty Museum hosted over 100 students, coaches, and directors from Hockey is for Everyone programs across North America as part of the 2018 NHL Willie O’Ree Skills Weekend with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation and the Philadelphia Flyers. Events also took place at the National Constitution Center, the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of ’23 Arena, and the Scanlon Ice Rink.
The Willie O’Ree Skills Weekend brings student athletes from across North America to Philadelphia to practice their on-ice skills and focus on the NHL’s Declaration of Principles, which includes Acceptance, Courage, Perseverance, Respect, Humility, Passion, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Willie O’Ree was the first hockey player to break the color barrier 60 years ago. He met with and spoke to the young student athletes during the welcome dinner hosted at NLM about his experience and the importance of courage and diversity. Learn more.
