Ukee Washington, a news anchor for CBS3’s Eyewitness News, recently highlighted the National Liberty Museum’s Young Heroes Outreach Program in his “Brotherly Love” segment. The story features a class of 5th graders from the Francis Scott Key School in South Philadelphia who participate in this yearlong, project-based initiative that teaches leadership, civic engagement, and social justice. The students in this story are researching social issues that impact their community and beyond. They will then vote on which issue will become their project for the year, as they apply the lessons they learn in their classroom to the real world. Francis Scott Key is one of 18 Philadelphia-area schools that participate in the Young Heroes Outreach Program. They will all join together at the end of the school year when they present their Social Action Projects at the program’s annual Impact Celebration.
