Check out the exhibition and immerse yourself in the complex stories that shape and enrich the American journey. Spark your creativity at our Creation Station\, including design-your-own buttons and a photo booth. Drop in for an interactive art-making workshop with exhibition artist Aram Han Sifuentes and put your hopes\, desires\, and demands for your community into action.  \n12 pm – 3 pm  \nHopes\, Desires\, and Demands: A Textile Workshop  \nJoin exhibition artist\, Aram Han Sifuentes\, for a hands-on\, art-making workshop that explores and activates our visions for a better world. Design your own fabric square and fill it with your hopes\, desires\, and demands for yourself and your communities. Learn and utilize different textile art skills\, such as embroidery\, embellishment\, and appliqué\, to create a statement that you want to share with the world. When finished\, put your designed statements into action – wear it as an accessory\, wave it around as flag or banner\, combine it with others to create a quilt\, or display it in the Museum for others to view.  \nAll ages and skill levels welcome – no prior experience necessary. Visitors  may drop in and participate any time during the 3-hour workshop\, but please note that space is limited. \n  \n  \nAbout Aram Han Sifuentes \nAram Han Sifuentes is a social practice artist who creates participatory projects around themes of protest\, voting rights\, citizenship\, and immigrant\, racial\, and economic justice. Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (Chicago)\, Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago)\, Chicago Cultural Center (Chicago)\, Pulitzer Arts Foundation (St. Louis)\, moCa Cleveland (Cleveland)\, and Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles).  \nHan Sifuentes has facilitated workshops for her projects internationally including at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City)\, Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago)\, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston)\, Zeeuws Museum (Middelburg\, Netherlands)\, and Vetenskaps Festivalen (Gothenburg\, Sweden). Han Sifuentes’s art works are included in various public collections including the Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Design Museum in London\, Herbert Johnson Museum of Art\, DePaul Art Museum\, and Wing Luke Museum of Asian Pacific American Experience.  \nHan Sifuentes has received numerous awards including 3Arts Award\, 3Arts Next Level Award\, Map Fund\, Joyce Award\, Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship\, Center for Craft’s Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship\, Asian Cultural Council’s Individual Fellowship Program\, and Illinois Arts Council’s Artist Fellowship. She is currently a full professor\, adjunct\, at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

An internationally acclaimed free speech scholar and advocate\, who regularly addresses diverse audiences and provides media commentary around the world\, Strossen is also the Host and Project Consultant for Free To Speak\, a 3-hour documentary film series distributed on public television in 2023. Her books about free speech include: Free Speech: What Everyone Needs to Know® (2023); HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech\, Not Censorship (2018); and Defending Pornography: Free Speech\, Sex\, and the Fight for Women’s Rights (1995)\, which was republished with a new Preface in 2024 as part of the NYU Classics Series. In 2023\, Strossen received the National Coalition Against Censorship’s Judy Blume Lifetime Achievement Award for Free Speech. She serves on the Advisory Boards of several organizations that do free speech work\, including: ACLU\, Academic Freedom Alliance\, Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism (FAIR)\, Heterodox Academy\, National Coalition Against Censorship\, and the University of Austin.

Moderator Stephanie Sparling Williams\, Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum\, will lead the discussion\, exploring the important role that art plays in liberal societies and the real tensions that emerge when artists engage in contemporary political and social movements. Hear directly from artists on how they maneuver in a challenging era of political polarization and around forces of social moderation and even censorship. Is art ever just… art? Or is the personal still political. \nPresented as part of Civic Season\, the panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A facilitated by Gen Z Civic Season Design Fellow Nsisong Udosen. \nThis event is online on Zoom. The married duo of Barry Lee (guitar and vocals) and Barbara Andrews-Christy (flues and vocals) are dedicated to the traditional Native American music and storytelling of the Eastern Woodlands. \n  \n3:15 pm – 4 pm \nLos Bomberos De La Calle \nLos Bomberos De La Calle is a Musical Group who performs traditional and contemporary styles of Bomba & Plena music from Puerto Rico as well as jamming out at local parks for the community. We also offer many assemblies and workshops throughout the year. We have been blessed to perform and share this soulful music at many events such as the annual Hispanic heritage festival in Philly\, Mummers Parade in 2015\, the annual Feria del Barrio festival\, annual sugar cane festival\, Kimmel Center/Songs Left Behind\, The Mann Center\, and many more. Our mission is to give a piece of Puerto Rican culture to Philly and the surrounding areas. Los Bomberos De La Calle is here to preserve educate and serve the community with this vibrant\, energetic and soulful music from Puerto Rico by collaborating with afterschool and in school programs as well as classes on the weekend for drumming and dancing. This music is the music of the people and brings everyone together\, young and old. \n  \n4:15 pm – 5 pm \nDolphin and LaPrelle \nElizabeth LaPrelle and Brian Dolphin are a married duo who share a love of bright vocal harmonies\, eerie traditional songs\, and heartfelt originals. SUMMARY:Teaching Immigration through Historical and Contemporary Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This immersive and interactive workshop\, in collaboration with Sphere Education Initiatives\, offers tools and resources for teachers to engage in meaningful exploration of immigration issues with their students. Investigate and discuss artwork in the Museum’s exhibition In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation and engage with different perspectives and experiences of the immigration journey in the United States. Explore Sphere’s resources on immigration education\, including their Green Card Game\, an online experience that aims to educate Americans about the severe difficulties immigrants face in obtaining U.S. permanent residence. By simulating the legal immigration process with real rules and regulations\, the game highlights the time\, cost\, and unpredictable factors that make the system nearly impossible to navigate. Educators will dig into the historical and contemporary status of immigration in America and leave with a suite of resources to create a classroom environment that respects different backgrounds and perspectives and encourages informed discussions about immigration. \nThis professional development workshop is available to teachers\, school faculty\, and educators of all kinds. Following the workshop\, attendees are invited to stay for a panel discussion on People\, Policy\, and Rethinking America’s Immigration Landscape hosted at the National Liberty Museum. Tickets for the panel discussion are $5 for teachers and school faculty\, with valid ID. For more information and to register to attend\, visit the event page on our website. Separate registration is required. \nPennsylvania educators who attend the full PD session and panel discussion are eligible for 2.5 Act 48 credits. \nAbout Sphere Education Initiatives\n \nSphere Education Initiatives is a nonpartisan organization that works with grades 5-12 educators and administrators to provide them with the knowledge\, experience\, professional development\, and viewpoint diverse resources to bring difficult conversations on the most pressing issues to the classroom and equip our country’s students to engage in civil discourse. \n\n\nMeet the Instructors\nAllan Carey \nAllan Carey is the Director of Sphere Education Initiatives at the Cato Institute where he leads the organization’s efforts to engage grades 5-12 educators\, including the annual Sphere Summit\, on civic education\, civil discourse\, and the institutions of civic culture. Prior to his time at the Cato Institute\, Allan served as the Director of Education for the Charles Koch Institute\, managing the organization’s suite of educational programs for early career professionals\, led educational programming for a network of 1500 employees\, and managed the Institute’s faculty. Allan holds a BA in political science\, history\, and philosophy from Ashland University and an MA in politics from the University of Dallas. He lives in Arlington\, VA with his wife and son. \nAllison Cepis \nAllison Cepis is the Museum Educator and School Programs Associate at the National Liberty Museum. Before entering museum education\, Allison spent a decade teaching in Philadelphia schools\, earning master’s degrees in secondary education in English and literacy for all grades from Saint Joseph’s University and Rosemont College. Throughout her career\, she has created engaging ELA curricula. Allison believes that museums and historic sites should be easily accessible\, highly inclusive\, and reflective of community input. She is dedicated to using education as a form of social justice and aims to help young learners make meaningful connections to the humanities during their visits to cultural institutions.

Record levels of migration to the United States in recent years have taxed an immigration system left nearly broken due to decades of congressional disputes and underinvestment. Sensational news coverage and partisan discourse about the border often conflates competing concerns over the rising tide of migrants displaced by climate change\, war and poverty\, national security\, and the state of the US economy\, leaving many of us to wonder: What exactly is happening at US borders and how can we make it better? Is there a way to preserve American interests and safely migrate potential new citizens into the country?  Inspired by powerful installations in our summer exhibition In Pursuit\, this dynamic discussion brings together a cross-perspective panel of scholars and experts to delve into the complexities of immigration policy and its multifaceted impact on our society. Andy previously served as the Community Development and Communications Director for SEAMAAC (Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition)\, whose mission is “to support and serve immigrants and refugees and other politically\, socially and economically marginalized communities as they seek to advance the condition of their lives in the United States”. Andy led the Conceptual Plan for Mifflin Square Park towards implementing a $4.2 million improvement. Andy and his team also managed the SoPhiE (South Philly East) Food Truck immigrant chef incubator that connects community through food and culture. \nBefore\, Andy was the Managing Director of the now built Chinatown Community Center Crane project\, a $77 Million mixed-use community development. Andy is recognized as a thought leader and innovator when it comes to community and economic development\, building a model Commercial Corridor Initiative at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation\, supporting minority businesses as Director of the Retail Resource Network at The Enterprise Center and before that building Philadelphia’s Brownfields Program bringing millions in new investments in job creating projects. \nAndy is currently President of the Philadelphia Committee on City Policy and on the Boards of the Union Benevolent Foundation\, the PA Downtown Center as well as an active Member of AAPIP Philadelphia and the Mayor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. Andy is a founder of the Philadelphia Public School Giving Circle and United Voices for Philadelphia and was an appointee on the Philadelphia Zoning Code Commission.  In 2006 Andy was selected as one of the top 101 Connectors in Philadelphia and in 2021 selected as a PA 50 Over 50 by City & State. \nAndy holds a B.A. in Economics and a Master’s Degree in Public and Urban Policy\, both from the University of Pennsylvania.  In his spare time he likes to listen to and create music\, watch the Eagles win\, and eat and cook a variety of cuisines.

In her role as editorial director\, she collaborates with students\, educators\, and SRL staff to transform great ideas into powerful stories that reach wide audiences. She joined SRL in 2019 as a youth media producer. Previously\, Marie was a multimedia reporter for stations in New York and Pennsylvania. She was also part of NPR’s Energy and Environment Collaborative and produced documentaries for PBS member stations. Marie’s reporting has been recognized with a Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists and a national Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association. \nLisa Wilk\, Director of School Partnerships at WHYY \nLisa Wilk (She/Her/Hers) has been teaching youth in Philadelphia for over a decade and is an advocate for youth produced media and community engagement. She has taught Journalism\, Photography\, Narrative and Documentary Filmmaking to students in grades K-12 across the city for Temple University and WHYY. She has a deep interest in helping teens engage with their community through research and multimedia storytelling. She is currently working as the Director of School Partnerships at WHYY. In this role\, she serves as the station’s liaison between local school districts\, teachers\, funders\, and evaluators. She also helped establish a partnership with PBS Newshour’s Student Reporting Labs to bring Philly teens’ voices to the national TV broadcast. In addition to teaching at WHYY\, Lisa has experience working as an adjunct professor of Temple University’s Department of Journalism’s award-winning capstone course\, Philadelphia Neighborhoods. She is also a certified Social Studies teacher and has worked as a freelance photographer and videographer. \n

Take copies of our Year of Free Speech Educator Resource Guide back to your classroom and continue the discussion of free expression with your students. \nContinue your exploration of free expression during a poetry workshop\, presented by local artist\, Marshall James Kavanaugh. Through environmentally conscious crafting\, educators will write haikus on recycled paper containing wildflower seeds\, which can later be planted in pots or home gardens. His conversational style and sharp timing make his shows feel like catching up with an old friend. Collin performs nationwide\, including The Comedy & Magic Club\, Pittsburgh Improv\, Helium Comedy Club\, and the historic Caroline’s on Broadway\, where he headlined. \nHe was featured at the prestigious Lucille Ball Comedy Festival at the National Comedy Center and recently performed at the 2024 Netflix Is A Joke Festival alongside Jessica Kirson and Ryan Hamilton. Collin has shared the stage with comedy legends like Steve Martin and Martin Short and is frequently requested by top headliners. In 2024\, Patrick’s media production work was accepted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library & Archive’s permanent audio/visual collection. In this hands-on workshop\, Word Powered exhibition artist Paul Travis Phillips invites you to explore that history in a surprising way: by using the pages of books to make your own mark. Traditionally\, books are tools used to transmit ideas into the minds of others. In this workshop\, you’ll reimagine your relationship to that tool—not as something to be read\, but as something to be handled\, altered\, and transformed. You’ll select a book that speaks to you\, then use its physical pages to create an original work of art. What does it mean to take a banned book and use it to create something new? To repurpose silenced pages into an expressive gesture? \nVisitors of all ages and skill levels are welcome to drop in and create between 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Those in the arts can help bridge this gap by portraying those across the political spectrum in a more empathetic light. To help empower those in the arts to achieve these goals\, the non-profit More Like US will provide an overview of its CAST (Complex\, Admirable\, Similar\, Together) framework and provide space to start workshopping ideas.
