DESCRIPTION:From stone tablets to the printing press to TikTok\, how we communicate has played an important role in sharing our beliefs and catalyzing movements. Join Data Nation featured artist Lane Timothy Speidel in this drop-in zine-making workshop. Short for “magazine\,” zines are handmade\, folded\, or bound paper publications. Make your zine by cutting\, collaging\, writing\, scanning\, finding\, and creating images\, words\, and textures. Add a poem\, story\, call to action or letter to a friend. Scan your zine in our print studio and add it to a “digital quilt\,” showcasing the sense of community that forms when people create together. \nMaterials will be provided\, but participants are welcome to bring photographs or other ephemera from home to personalize their zines. We’ll even scan them for you so you can hold on to those precious memories forever! For the last 17 years he has worked in various positions in the Academy of Natural Sciences\, and his current role as Chair for Environmental Initiative includes leading a team working on understanding the ecological health of the Delaware Basin. From working in urban watersheds he has developed an interest in broader questions of human ecology\, particular in the interface of human and nonhuman systems. \nRoger Turner \n \nRoger Turner is curator of instruments and artifacts at the Science History Institute. He studies how the invisible work of nerds enables modern life. This includes chemistry\, environmental forecasting\, and the failed science of weather control. Turner creates digital exhibits for the Science History Institute and writes for Distillationsmagazine. He has worked with meteorologists to preserve the history of the National Weather Service’s once-secret national defense lab\, and with chemists to recover the stories of Nobel Prize worthy instruments. He earned his PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. \n  \nMODERATOR \n \nJulie Hancher is Co-Founder & Editor of Green Philly\, a digital media publication that connects people to sustainable solutions. DESCRIPTION:Join Temple University Architecture Professors Ulysses Sean Vance\, Jeffrey Nesbit and Ryan Thomas Devlin\, along with Keely Milbourne (Haverford College) and Peng Du (Jefferson University)\, and Inga Saffron\, architecture critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer as they reveal and discuss design submissions to Project Bus Stop\, a public challenge to Philadelphia’s design community to consider the significance of public transportation infrastructure in the city. Prompted by the recent closure and relocation of the Greyhound Bus Terminal\, Project Bus Stop solicits ideas from students\, faculty\, designers\, and regional firms on how to create a new urban ecology for bus transportation in Philly’s downtown area. \nSubmissions from the competition will be on display throughout the evening\, and guests will have the opportunity to explore the museum’s galleries\, including our latest exhibition\, Project Liberty: A Design Challenge\, which applies design thinking to resolving everyday challenges. His research focuses on urban informality in cities of the Global North. He is specifically interested in informal placemaking strategies of immigrant groups in U.S. cities\, and how planners\, urban designers\, and public administrators respond to such actions. His current work focuses on street vending and other uses of public space for livelihoods. Ryan is a community-engaged scholar who works closely with a variety of activist groups supporting informal workers such as the Street Vendor Project in New York City\, and Women in Informal Employment Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO)\, an international NGO.  \n  \n \nPeng Du\, Ph.D.\, LEED AP\, WELL AP \nDr. Du is currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor and Director of both Master of Urban Design – Future Cities (MUD) and M.S. in Urban Analytics and Geodesign programs at the College of Architecture and Built Environment in Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He is also a Research Fellow of Jefferson Institute of Smart & Healthy Cities. Dr. Du’s expertise is in net-zero buildings and cities\, computational urban design\, urban energy modeling\, urban data analytics\, and mixed reality (VR/AR) technologies\, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches. Dr. Du’s research has received broad media coverage by venues such as Curbed\, CityLab\, and Smart Cities World. Prior to joining Thomas Jefferson University\, Dr. Du taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Texas Tech University. He also served in several leadership roles at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)\, including director & board member of CTBUH Asia\, and board member of CTBUH Philadelphia Chapter. Dr. Du is a LEED-Accredited Professional and WELL-Accredited Professional. \n  \n \nKeely Milbourne \nKeely Milbourne\, pronouns: she\, her\, is a Disability Civil Rights advocate in the greater Philadelphia and Delaware areas. She currently serves as the Director of Access and Disability Services at Haverford College\, as a volunteer accessibility specialist with Philly’s Community Design Collaborative\, and on the Governor’s Advisory Council for Delaware’s Division of Parks and Recreation. In her free time\, Keely does more of this work but occasionally finds time to kayak and watch birds. \n \nJeffrey S. Nesbit \nJeffrey S. Nesbit is an architect\, urbanist\, director of the research group Grounding Design\, and assistant professor in history and theory of architecture and urbanism at Temple University. His experience spanning over a decade includes leading design teams for public architecture and large-scale urban projects\, along with managing sponsored design research projects for city governments\, local institutions\, and NGOs. Nesbit has published several journal articles and book chapters\, and editor of multiple books\, including Nature of Enclosure (Actar\, 2022)\, co-editor of Technical Lands: A Critical Primer (Jovis\, 2023)\, New Geographies 11 Extraterrestrial (Actar\, 2019)\, Chasing the City: Models for Extra-Urban Investigations (Routledge\, 2018)\, and host and producer of three podcasts. \n  \n \nInga Saffron \nInga Saffron is the architecture critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. For more than 20 years\, she has been a forceful advocate for meaningful design\, accessible public spaces and transit\, affordable housing\, historic preservation and policies that make our cities more liveable and climate resilient.  Her work has been recognized with numerous awards\, including the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism\, the 2018 Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum\,  a 2012  Loeb Fellowship from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship. In June 2020\, Rutgers University Press published a selection of her Inquirer columns about Philadelphia’s urban recovery\,  Becoming Philadelphia: How an old American city made itself new again. \nShe started her career as a municipal reporter\, covering local planning and zoning meetings\,  and went on to become a foreign correspondent\, covering wars in Yugoslavia and Russia during the 1990s\,  and witnessing the destruction of Sarajevo and Grozny. In addition to her writing about architecture and urbanism\, she is an expert on the cultural history of \nsturgeon. Her book\, Caviar: The Strange History and Uncertain Future of the World’s \nMost Coveted Delicacy\, appeared in 2003 to rave reviews. She is currently working on a history of the American newspaper building. \n  \nUlysses Sean Vance \nSean is a Professor of Architecture at Temple University where his research in architecture is directed by accessibility in buildings and involves designing interventions for the health and well-being of underserved communities. It is research founded on inclusive decision-making in the planning and programming of institutional space and has primarily focused on differences in accommodating adolescent and geriatric health services\, including medical\, hygienic\, physically active\, respitive\, and nutritionally-oriented interventions. His active projects have addressed the complexity of resolving health disparities in urban environments by examining the extent of adversity\, material hardships\, and the protective factors associated with physical\, social\, neurologically diverse\, and behavioral-based concerns. His current research with the Temple University Urban Workshop addresses the engagement of early adolescents who are physically and neurologically diverse and determining the operational and navigational needs for Variety the Children’s Charity of Delaware Valley as they aspire to provide accessible cabins for their community.

He is best known for his work with the cosmic funk rock band OOLALA\, absurdist funk and soul group Johnny Showcase and the Mystic Ticket\, the psychedelic folk collective The Spinning Leaves\, his stint on the TV show America’s Got Talent\, and for his vegetable skewers cooked over an open fire. He will wow your socks off. \n \nImpresario and dilettante Kevin Monko sings and plays guitar with Candy Volcano\, the glam rock extravaganza he co-founded 11 years ago after a lifetime of only playing original music\, primarily with his band MONKO. His poetry installation/performances LifeLines and Safe Distances were in residence at the Dysfunctional Collective house\, Governors Island\, in 2016 and 2017. Participants will delve into iconic moments\, influential artists\, and the cultural impact of this genre. Through collage\, storytelling\, and artistic expression\, attendees will create personalized zines reflecting their connection to hip hop’s evolution over the past five decades. This workshop celebrates the intersection of art\, culture\, and self-expression\, inviting all to contribute their unique voice to the ongoing narrative of hip hop.   \n2 pm – 3 pm A History of Hip Hop Sampling with John Morrison and Josh Leidy \nDelve deep into the history of sampling with Writer/Podcast duo\, John Morrison and Josh Leidy. This fun and informal conversation will explore the history of sampling and its role in the evolution of modern music. Morrison and Leidy will host a thought-provoking presentation complete with music and enlightening history.  \nMeet the Artists & Partners\nZindzi Harley is a curator and creative consultant who focuses on the histories and narratives of the African Diaspora in contemporary art\, material culture\, fashion\, and design. She is the Founder and Editor-In-Chief of Zindzine\, a quarterly publication that features diverse and innovative artists\, creatives\, and businesses from Philadelphia. She formerly served as Assistant Curator at the African American Museum in Philadelphia\, where she facilitated and curated exhibitions and programs that expanded the interpretation and representation of Black culture. Additionally\, she has collaborated with various Philadelphia organizations and historic sites\, such as Ars Nova Workshop and Past Present Projects\, to develop and deliver community-based initiatives. She is passionate about creating and supporting platforms that amplify the voices and center storytelling of marginalized and underrepresented communities.  \nJosh Leidy is a writer\, podcaster and filmmaker from Philadelphia. Leidy currently works as an independent journalist with WXPN and his celebrated 2021 essay\, Copaganda explores the impact that media has on policing and the Criminal Justice system.  \nJohn Morrison is a writer\, DJ and producer from Philadelphia. His work has appeared in the New York Times\, NPR Music and Tidal. Morrison is currently working on a book about the history of hip-hop culture in Philadelphia.  \nRhonda Moore is a Dancing Classrooms Philly teaching artist\, sound and movement performance artist\, educator and community-based dance enthusiast. Her talents have led to collaborations with acclaimed dance artists such as Jamie Cunningham’s ACME Dance Company\, Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company\, Brigid Baker\, Sylvain Émard\, Boris Charmatz\, and Nichole Canuso. SUMMARY:Teaching Immigration through Historical and Contemporary Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This immersive and interactive workshop\, in collaboration with Sphere Education Initiatives\, offers tools and resources for teachers to engage in meaningful exploration of immigration issues with their students. Investigate and discuss artwork in the Museum’s exhibition In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation and engage with different perspectives and experiences of the immigration journey in the United States. Explore Sphere’s resources on immigration education\, including their Green Card Game\, an online experience that aims to educate Americans about the severe difficulties immigrants face in obtaining U.S. permanent residence. By simulating the legal immigration process with real rules and regulations\, the game highlights the time\, cost\, and unpredictable factors that make the system nearly impossible to navigate. Educators will dig into the historical and contemporary status of immigration in America and leave with a suite of resources to create a classroom environment that respects different backgrounds and perspectives and encourages informed discussions about immigration. \nThis professional development workshop is available to teachers\, school faculty\, and educators of all kinds. Following the workshop\, attendees are invited to stay for a panel discussion on People\, Policy\, and Rethinking America’s Immigration Landscape hosted at the National Liberty Museum. Allan holds a BA in political science\, history\, and philosophy from Ashland University and an MA in politics from the University of Dallas. He lives in Arlington\, VA with his wife and son. \nAllison Cepis \nAllison Cepis is the Museum Educator and School Programs Associate at the National Liberty Museum. Before entering museum education\, Allison spent a decade teaching in Philadelphia schools\, earning master’s degrees in secondary education in English and literacy for all grades from Saint Joseph’s University and Rosemont College. Throughout her career\, she has created engaging ELA curricula. Allison believes that museums and historic sites should be easily accessible\, highly inclusive\, and reflective of community input. She is dedicated to using education as a form of social justice and aims to help young learners make meaningful connections to the humanities during their visits to cultural institutions.

Andy previously served as the Community Development and Communications Director for SEAMAAC (Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition)\, whose mission is “to support and serve immigrants and refugees and other politically\, socially and economically marginalized communities as they seek to advance the condition of their lives in the United States”. Andy led the Conceptual Plan for Mifflin Square Park towards implementing a $4.2 million improvement. Andy and his team also managed the SoPhiE (South Philly East) Food Truck immigrant chef incubator that connects community through food and culture. \nBefore\, Andy was the Managing Director of the now built Chinatown Community Center Crane project\, a $77 Million mixed-use community development. Andy is recognized as a thought leader and innovator when it comes to community and economic development\, building a model Commercial Corridor Initiative at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation\, supporting minority businesses as Director of the Retail Resource Network at The Enterprise Center and before that building Philadelphia’s Brownfields Program bringing millions in new investments in job creating projects. \nAndy is currently President of the Philadelphia Committee on City Policy and on the Boards of the Union Benevolent Foundation\, the PA Downtown Center as well as an active Member of AAPIP Philadelphia and the Mayor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. Andy is a founder of the Philadelphia Public School Giving Circle and United Voices for Philadelphia and was an appointee on the Philadelphia Zoning Code Commission.  In 2006 Andy was selected as one of the top 101 Connectors in Philadelphia and in 2021 selected as a PA 50 Over 50 by City & State. \nAndy holds a B.A. in Economics and a Master’s Degree in Public and Urban Policy\, both from the University of Pennsylvania.  In his spare time he likes to listen to and create music\, watch the Eagles win\, and eat and cook a variety of cuisines.
