SUMMARY:NLM at Night: Bowie Bash & Pop-Up Gallery Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:NLM will be hosting our 3rd Annual Bowie Bash and Pop-Up Art Sale – the official evening kick-off event for Philly Loves Bowie Week. NLM at Night: Bowie Bash\, will be on Friday January 6th\, coinciding with the opening of our Bowie-inspired Gallery and Art Sale\, which runs until January 23rd. \nBowie Bash will feature live music by Johnny Showcase and Rumi Kitchen performing Bowie covers\, specialty cocktails from Tattooed Mom and a raffle for some fun Bowie-inspired prizes. The pop-up gallery features local artists celebrating David Bowie’s legacy in the creative freedom he inspired. The artwork on display will be for sale\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)\, in partnership with Philly Loves Bowie Week. \nWith the news of Dito’s\, also known as Martha Graham Cracker\, leukemia diagnosis\, we will also be hosting a swabbing event with Be the Match during Bowie Bash on Jan 6th to help find a peripheral blood stem cell match. This will be an opportunity for anybody 18-40 years old to get swabbed to see if they are a potential match for Martha or for someone else needing a donor. The process is a quick one – you fill out a short medical history to determine if you are a fit to become a possible donor\, then you swab your cheek\, and finally you then wait to see if you are matched. \nEarly Bird and VIP access tickets are now on sale. \nBuy Tickets \n

Exploring themes of ecology\, community\, liberation\, and self-determination\, Imagined Futures brings together 10 artists from around the world to reflect on the futures that could be\, and the selected work showcases how translating varying pasts into visions of the future can empower generations to act in the present.  \nNLM’s Community Open House is proudly sponsored by \n \n  \nMeet the Artists:  \nAgaba Solomon Peabo\nAgaba Solomon Peabo is a self-taught multidisciplinary creative born and raised in Uganda. Agaba juxtaposes elements of reality with surrealism using digital art\, a reverence for nature\, and a love of the streets to produce Afro-futuristic and immersive photos of the Africa of his dreams. Agaba’s work has been featured and shown in several group exhibitions\, such as Big Arts Exhibition\, Florida (2022) curated by Wilson McCray. \nAnnie Blazejack and Geddes Levenson\nAnnie Blazejack and Geddes Levenson have been working together for over a decade and explore the relationship between humans and ecosystems through their work. Blazejack received her MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston / Tufts University\, in 2013\, while Levenson received her MFA from Pratt University in 2014. \nChau Nguyen\nAs a Vietnamese immigrant artist and educator based in Philadelphia\, they draw from concepts of memory\, translation\, material transformation\, Vietnamese historical archives\, and the global supply chain to convey the complexity of postcolonial societies. Nguyen received their BA in Fine Arts and History of Art from Bryn Mawr College and their MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art and Architecture. They were an artist-in-residence at Wassaic Project\, Dear Artists\, 77Art Center\, and Chautauqua Art Institution. \nHeather Ujiie\nHeather Ujiie is an Interdisciplinary Associate Professor at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia\, and her textile installations and artwork have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work synthesizes several methods of artistry\, including painting\, drawing\, stitching\, fiber manipulation\, and digital printing technology on fabric. She hopes her digitally printed textile installations ignite deep spiritual forays into the imagination and generate reflection on what is hidden\, whether it be our own personal demons or lust for life. \nJuan Jose Cielo\nJuan Jose Cielo is a Colombian-American artist based in New York City who works in painting\, photography\, and short films. Through his work\, he creates space where Latino myth/folklore are part of the visions of a futuristic world. His work has been featured in galleries and exhibitions including The Coral Springs Museum of Art\, the Consulate of Colombia in New York City\, and The Alliance Française in Bogota. \nKomikka Patton\nKomikka Patton is a peripatetic 2D multimedia artist. Patton uses ink\, paper\, and various printmaking techniques to create works centrally based on the African Diasporan human condition; her large paper installations and collages touch futurism\, transhumanism\, mythology\, and storytelling. She is the winner of a Darryl Chappell Foundation Grant\, NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Finalist\, and the May and Samuel Rudin Foundation Scholarship. She obtained her BFA in Fine Arts from Columbus College of Art & Design and an MFA from New York University. \nOwo Anietie\nAs a Nigerian digital artist\, he defines the medium with his innovative take on Afrofuturism to create new narratives with technology-based work. Inspired by science fiction literature\, Owo sees the core concept of Afrofuturism as people dreaming of a better life. Recognized as an established creative presence within the African NFT community and beyond it\, Owo’s narrative-based conceptual work has defined his meteoric rise in the crypto art space. \nSāgar Kāmath\nAn interdisciplinary artist that creates work exploring his identity as an Indian-born American through painting\, digital design\, and dance. He draws inspiration from traditional South Asian forms and aesthetics to create joyous chaos––appropriating aspects of Indian folk\, traditional\, classical art & dance in contrast to his existence as a Western-based and raised artist. Sāgar is currently pursuing his MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art. \nSmaragda Nitsopoulou\nA video artist\, film director\, and editor from Greece\, she explores the themes of memory and death in the Anthropocene era. Her exhibition includes research-based artworks and the use of archival footage of the past to highlight the point of view of the future towards the past. She has participated in international festivals and art fairs such as Documenta 14\, Video Art Miden & Simultan\, and completed her first feature-length documentary\, “Death Under Control\,” in 2021. \nSolarpunk Surf Club\nSolarpunk Surf Club is an artist collective that creates and curates egalitarian platforms for surfing the waves of still-possible worlds. Tickets include an exclusive cocktail reception with hosts and panelists\, with remarks from Don Wildman\, with sales will benefitting the Carpenters’ Hall Recovery Fund. \nVIP Event: 5:30-630 pm \nPanel Discussion: 6:30-7:30 pm \nClick to Purchase Tickets \n$40 VIP Ticket\, $20 General Admission\, $10 for NLM Members\nAll ticket levels include access to the museum. \nAbout Carpenters’ Hall Recovery Benefit \nLocated in Independence National Historical Park and a National Historic Landmark\, Carpenters’ Hall was built in the early 1770s and hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774\, one of the most significant events in the founding of our nation. On Christmas Eve 2022\, Carpenters’ Hall was broken into and a fire was started in the basement. The fire came at the end of a once-in-a-generation preservation project\, and after eight months of closure\, the Hall was set to reopen in February. \nWhile the fire was thankfully contained in the basement\, the basement and its contents suffered extensive damage in the flames. As they navigate the damage and explore a new path to reopening\, we are asking the public to support them in our efforts. While insurance will cover much of the destruction\, Carpenters’ Hall will need to commit to new improvements to prevent another tragedy from occurring again in the future. Public donations will help to fund an improved security system\, including new security cameras\, fire protection systems\, fireproof archival storage\, and environmental protections for our collections.

He has authored books about sex and alcohol education\, history and religion in the curriculum\, Americans who taught overseas\, and historical memory in public schooling. His most recent work examines campus politics in the United States\, the teaching of controversial issues in public schools\, and the history of college teaching. \nMODERATOR  \n \nLayla A. Jones is a reporter whose community-based reporting has helped bring visibility and financial support to underserved neighborhood organizations\, earned free repairs for property owners who sustained damages in a police shootout\, and brought increased attention to a particularly dangerous North Philadelphia corner. Layla recently wrapped the Philadelphia Inquirer’s year-long More Perfect Union project\, which explored Philadelphia’s role in creating historic institutional racism that persists today. She’s currently the economic equity reporter at the Inquirer\, where she covers how policy impacts people’s finances.

SUMMARY:NLM Celebrates: PARK(ing) Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, PARK(ing) Day invites cities around the country to rethink what public places can be by transforming parking spaces into miniature parks. This year\, NLM is partnering with PHILADELPHIA250 to create a pop-up experience designed to inspire reflection and spark conversation. Join us to explore the contemporary meaning of liberty through thought-provoking questions and collaborative art as we take our latest exhibition Project Liberty: A Design Challenge to the streets. See you outside! \nPARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar\, a San Francisco art and design studio\, in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments. Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing\, cycling\, creating art\, education\, and socializing.
