SUMMARY:NLM Speaker Series: Free Speech\, or a Free-for-All?
DESCRIPTION:In connection with the launch of truth*\, this kickoff conversation asks if the fundamental right to freedom of speech – or the limitation of it – comes with unintended consequences. In a world of unlimited access to speech platforms\, is speech truly free\, or is it in a free-for-all? Does this age of hyper-communication lead to increasing polarization\, or is it the key to finding common ground? Would limiting equal amplification of varying perspectives lead to the limitation of diverse thinking and new ideas\, or are some interpretations of what is “true” frankly too dangerous to spread?  \nJoin a panel of thought leaders including Greg Lukianoff\, CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression; Lee McIntyre\, philosopher and author of Post-Truth and How to Talk to a Science Denier\, and others as they ask: in a world full of unlimited access to speech platforms\, is speech truly free\, or is it in a free-for-all? \nJoin us for a live watch party at NLM\, from 6-8pm\, and enjoy special behind-the-scenes access to our latest exhibition truth* plus a special cocktail. \nModerator\n \nCherri Gregg is an afternoon drive host/news anchor for WHYY radio. Prior to her current position\, the award winning journalist covered civil rights\, social justice\, race and public affairs issues impacting marginalized communities in the Greater Philadelphia region\, spending nearly a decade on air at KYW Newsradio. SUMMARY:NLM at Night: Night of the Lying Dead
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of Halloween\, join us for an evening exploring the terrifying ties between truth\, lies\, and fear. Film critic for Newsday Rafer Guzman dives into horror on the silver screen to show how eras of movie monsters reflect real-world anxieties\, from the “body snatcher” films that characterized the McCarthyistic 1950s to the examinations of race and gender in today’s social horror hits. Hear from Kathy Kelly\, owner of Paranormal Books and Curiosities and curator of The Paranormal Museum\, about how horrifying happenings spread like wildfire through rumors\, urban legends\, and folklore. \nExplore our latest exhibition truth* and walk the fine line between truth and lies. What are you really afraid of? Grab a signature cocktail\, sit back\, and find out!  \n6pm – Doors open: enjoy creepy cocktails\, spooky snacks\, and our newest exhibition\, truth*! Take part in The Science of Fear: Perception is Reality\, an ongoing sequence of interactive activities exploring how fear can impact what we see as true. \nEvery half hour – All Eyes on Me: Dissecting the Science of Sight – Is seeing believing? See for yourself how the eye works with this live dissection presentation\, and hear how our sense of sight can be mislead\, misinformed\, or otherwise clouded with scary stimuli. Caution: what you see here may be disturbing. Presented in partnership with the Academy of Natural Sciences. \n6:30 pm – Paranormal Pennsylvania: History\, Mystery\, and Mythology – Join Kathy Kelly\, founder of Paranormal Books & Curiosities and The Paranormal Museum in Asbury Park\, NJ as she investigates stories of ghosts and unexplained happenings in the Philadelphia area. What does our fascination with ghost stories say about us\, and how can we find the truth in the terror? \n8:00 pm – 100 Years of Fears: A Century of American Anxieties Through the Lens of Horror – From vampires to body snatchers to the socially-charged horror of today\, horror movies have always acted as a dark mirror of our very real anxieties. Join Newsday film critic Rafer Guzman for a decade-by-decade dive into how what we fear on the screen reflects the greater truth of what society has contended with through the history of the genre. Featuring discussion of films such as Haxan\, Invasion of the Body Snatchers\, The Exorcist\, Scream\, and many more. \nSpeakers\n \nRafer Guzmán is a film critic and entertainment reporter for Newsday in New York. He is also a frequent contributor to WNYC’s “The Takeaway\,” a co-host of the podcast “Movie Therapy with Rafer and Kristen” and a member of the New York Film Critics Circle. \n\n \nKathy Kelly is a true student of the paranormal. From her first play written at age 8 called\, “Monsters” to her most recent trip to investigate the Queen Mary\, Kathy eats\, sleeps\, and loves the paranormal. A steadfast supporter of story telling and community building\, Kathy believes that in every story there is a kernel of truth and sometimes a whole lot more than that. \nKathy opened Paranormal Book & Curiosities in 2008 and The Paranormal Museum soon after to share her love of the strange and unusual with others. A gifted story teller\, Kathy has a Master’s degree in history and find that the two go hand in hand. Her lectures are intriguing and entertaining as well as illuminating and unique. Kathy’s knowledge of history and all that is paranormal are only surpassed by her friendly and humorous personality. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:NLM at Night: Bowie Bash & Pop-Up Gallery Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:NLM will be hosting our 3rd Annual Bowie Bash and Pop-Up Art Sale – the official evening kick-off event for Philly Loves Bowie Week. NLM at Night: Bowie Bash\, will be on Friday January 6th\, coinciding with the opening of our Bowie-inspired Gallery and Art Sale\, which runs until January 23rd. \nBowie Bash will feature live music by Johnny Showcase and Rumi Kitchen performing Bowie covers\, specialty cocktails from Tattooed Mom and a raffle for some fun Bowie-inspired prizes. The pop-up gallery features local artists celebrating David Bowie’s legacy in the creative freedom he inspired. The artwork on display will be for sale\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)\, in partnership with Philly Loves Bowie Week. \nWith the news of Dito’s\, also known as Martha Graham Cracker\, leukemia diagnosis\, we will also be hosting a swabbing event with Be the Match during Bowie Bash on Jan 6th to help find a peripheral blood stem cell match. This will be an opportunity for anybody 18-40 years old to get swabbed to see if they are a potential match for Martha or for someone else needing a donor. The process is a quick one – you fill out a short medical history to determine if you are a fit to become a possible donor\, then you swab your cheek\, and finally you then wait to see if you are matched. \nEarly Bird and VIP access tickets are now on sale. \nBuy Tickets \n

The fire came at the end of a once-in-a-generation preservation project\, and after eight months of closure\, the Hall was set to reopen in February. \nWhile the fire was thankfully contained in the basement\, the basement and its contents suffered extensive damage in the flames. As they navigate the damage and explore a new path to reopening\, we are asking the public to support them in our efforts. While insurance will cover much of the destruction\, Carpenters’ Hall will need to commit to new improvements to prevent another tragedy from occurring again in the future. Public donations will help to fund an improved security system\, including new security cameras\, fire protection systems\, fireproof archival storage\, and environmental protections for our collections.

He has authored books about sex and alcohol education\, history and religion in the curriculum\, Americans who taught overseas\, and historical memory in public schooling. His most recent work examines campus politics in the United States\, the teaching of controversial issues in public schools\, and the history of college teaching. \nMODERATOR  \n \nLayla A. Jones is a reporter whose community-based reporting has helped bring visibility and financial support to underserved neighborhood organizations\, earned free repairs for property owners who sustained damages in a police shootout\, and brought increased attention to a particularly dangerous North Philadelphia corner. She’s currently the economic equity reporter at the Inquirer\, where she covers how policy impacts people’s finances.
