You and your little learner are welcome to create a story based on one of our six character traits that Lila Liberty helped teach us this year– responsibility\, respect\, perseverance\, courage\, integrity\, or empathy. Chat with your learner about a time where they showed one (or more!) of these traits. \nRequirements: \n\nNO crayons or pencils. Using a marker for writing and drawing will make sure the final product is legible.\nDraw your illustration on a half sheet of 8.5″x11″ paper and write your story on the other. This will give us room to design the storybook with more flexibility.\nALL stages of writing development are accepted- from scribbles to stick figures\, we want it all!\n\nTHE FIRST FIVE SUBMISSIONS WILL RECIEVE A FREE COPY OF OUR ANTHOLOGY! \n  \n\n Submit to the Anthology\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Are These Truths Still Self-Evident? Re-Reading the Declaration of Independence in 2022
DESCRIPTION:Free with museum admission \n“We hold these truths to be self-evident\, that all men are created equal…” One of the most consequential phrases in history\, this piece of the Declaration of Independence has been at the heart of American democracy since its inception. What we as a nation hold to be true has perhaps never been so important since the Revolution\, but how can we be sure of the meaning of the truth? Join Jason Steinhauer\, author of History\, Disrupted: How Social Media and the World Wide Web Have Changed the Past\, for a special Independence Week presentation that examines the profound changes that concepts like “truth\,” “fact\,” and “self-evident” have weathered in the two-and-a-half centuries since the Declaration was penned. Presented in partnership with the National Constitution Center as part of the Finding the Founders series of scholar talks.

SUMMARY:NLM Speaker Series: Free Speech\, or a Free-for-All?
DESCRIPTION:In connection with the launch of truth*\, this kickoff conversation asks if the fundamental right to freedom of speech – or the limitation of it – comes with unintended consequences. In a world of unlimited access to speech platforms\, is speech truly free\, or is it in a free-for-all? Does this age of hyper-communication lead to increasing polarization\, or is it the key to finding common ground? Would limiting equal amplification of varying perspectives lead to the limitation of diverse thinking and new ideas\, or are some interpretations of what is “true” frankly too dangerous to spread?  \nJoin a panel of thought leaders including Greg Lukianoff\, CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression; Lee McIntyre\, philosopher and author of Post-Truth and How to Talk to a Science Denier\, and others as they ask: in a world full of unlimited access to speech platforms\, is speech truly free\, or is it in a free-for-all? \nJoin us for a live watch party at NLM\, from 6-8pm\, and enjoy special behind-the-scenes access to our latest exhibition truth* plus a special cocktail. \nModerator\n \nCherri Gregg is an afternoon drive host/news anchor for WHYY radio. SUMMARY:NLM Family Day: The Stories We Tell

Drop in for a rattle-making workshop to learn how to make traditional instruments inspired by the modern Indigenous story portrayed in the book I Will Carry You. Join storyteller\, musician\, and magician Tchin for two special performances featuring oral history and creation stories. Stop by our Liberty Learning Lab: truth* Pursuits and learn how the celebration of Thanksgiving has evolved over time\, and share what occasions we may celebrate in the future. There are stories\, games and more\, as we strive for a rich understanding of the cultural traditions that are observed in various ways around the nation at this time of year. \nRun of Show: \n10:00 am – Museum opens for regular hours \n12:00 pm – Family Day programming begins\, free to join with museum admission. \n12:00 – 4:00 pm – Join We Are The Seeds in the second floor gallery for a hands-on rattle-making workshop\, inspired by the storybook I Will Carry You. \n12:00 – 4:00 pm – Visit the Liberty Learning Lab for resources about how the Thanksgiving holiday has evolved and what this means for our complicated history. While they are located in the Northeast\, their work impacts Indigenous peoples nationally and globally. We Are the Seeds is continually challenging Indigenous erasure and invisibility and creating safe spaces to exist as they are— beautiful\, thriving peoples with important histories and even stronger futures. \nTchin is a nationally known artist and educator of arts and culture. Through the art of oral tradition\, he tells stories portraying the creation of the world and how things came to be. In his energizing presentation\, Tchin addresses important topics including: cultural diversity\, music appreciation\, and environmental consciousness. These stories have been passed down through generations and illuminate both young and mature minds. As part of this program\, Tchin will perform and explain the seldom seen or heard courting flute.
