SUMMARY:Community Open House with Artist Tulu Bayar
DESCRIPTION:Lumen Printing Workshop with Tulu Bayar\nJoin artist and educator Tulu Bayar on July 11\, from 1:00–4:00 p.m.\, for an afternoon of creative experimentation with this captivating camera-less photographic process. \nThis free workshop will follow a drop in format\, but participants are encouraged to come earlier in the day\, as the prints take approximately 30 minutes to develop.  Participants are welcome to enjoy the museum while they wait for their prints. \nLumen Printing  \nLumen printing is an early photographic process that traces its origins to the nineteenth century. Unlike traditional photography\, it does not require a camera. Instead\, images are created by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive silver gelatin photographic paper and exposing them to sunlight. \nAs the paper reacts to light\, the objects block or filter the exposure\, producing delicate silhouettes and surprisingly rich colors. Every print is one of a kind\, shaped by the light\, the materials\, and the duration of the exposure. Natural materials such as leaves\, flowers\, grasses\, and feathers often produce especially beautiful results because of their varied textures and chemical properties\, but reflective objects can create equally compelling images. \nWhat to Expect \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a few flat or low-profile small objects that hold personal meaning and will fit within an 11 × 14 inch sheet of photographic paper. Pressed botanicals\, jewelry\, lace\, keys\, handwritten notes\, or other cherished keepsakes can all become part of a unique composition. Reflective materials such as glass or metal may produce especially unexpected and expressive effects. \nAbout Tulu Bayar \nTulu Bayar (she/her) is a Turkish-born visual artist and Professor of Art at Bucknell University. Her interdisciplinary\, lens-based work has been exhibited widely\, with recent solo shows at Strata Gallery (NM)\, Amos Eno Gallery (NYC)\, and Ferda Art Platform (Istanbul)\, often accompanied by exhibition catalogs. Her work is included in public collections such as the Elgiz Museum\, Samuel Dorsky Museum\, and the Textile Museum at GWU. Bayar has received awards from the Fulbright Program\, Puffin Foundation\, and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. She has participated in fully funded residencies at Ucross\, Foundation House\, VCCA\, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock. This year\, our speaker programs will focus on our right to peaceably assemble. \nAbortion is one of the most pivotal and divisive topics of our time.  The debate over abortion often frames our political divide and it shapes our social discourse. \nThe National Liberty Museum will bring together leading voices in the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice for a one-hour\, moderated discussion. \nAmy Sohn\nAmy Sohn is the New York Times-bestselling author of twelve books\, including the novels Prospect Park West\, Motherland\, and The Actress. Her nonfiction book The Man Who Hated Women was published by Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in 2021\, following Brooklyn Bailey\, the Missing Dog\, her first children’s book\, and CBD!\, a satirical take on a classic children’s story. Her books have been published in eleven languages and distributed across five continents. \nA graduate of Brown University\, Sohn began her career as a columnist and journalist\, writing for publications including the New York Times\, Slate\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Elle\, and Playboy. After working her way up from volunteer to director of one of their facilities and even winning Planned Parenthood’s employee of the year award\, Abby had a surprising change of heart after witnessing a live ultrasound guided abortion procedure. It became clear in that moment that abortion did not provide the freedom she had promised so many women in those counseling rooms. Abortion only causes harm\, destruction\, and devastation. Upon that realization\, Abby left her job in the abortion industry and has been sharing her experiences ever since. Abby’s greatest blessing is her vocation of wife and mother. She lives in Texas with her husband and 8 beautiful children. Sports broadcasting legend Joe DeCamara will moderate the discussion with sports legends Valerie Still\, Milt Thompson\, and more. Join us for an engaging and unique evening. \n  \n\nGuest Speakers\nJoe DeCamara is a Philadelphia-based sports radio personality and co-host of the morning show on Philadelphia’s top-rated sports-talk radio program. A longtime voice in the region’s sports media scene\, he previously hosted the station’s midday program and has also worked with ESPN Radio and 97.5 The Fanatic. Known for his energetic style and deep connection to Philadelphia sports\, DeCamara has become a leading figure in local sports talk. \n  \n  \n  \nValerie Still is a former professional basketball player and Camden\, New Jersey native\, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in University of Kentucky history. She holds the school’s all-time records in scoring and rebounding (men’s or women’s) and went on to a successful international and U.S. pro career\, including championships in the American Basketball League and a stint in the WNBA. A Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee\, Still is also an author\, speaker\, and youth advocate. \n  \nMilt Thompson is a former Major League Baseball outfielder and longtime member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. A key player on the 1993 National League championship team\, he later served as the Phillies’ hitting coach for the 2008 World Series champions. Thompson is currently a club ambassador\, focusing on community outreach and youth baseball development initiatives.

Experienced tour guides will take you on a walking tour through the heart of Old City and share the stories which unfolded in the many taverns which dotted the city. Begin the tour with a short beer tasting at the museum\, a mid-point beer at Independence Beer Garden courtesy of the museum\, and an opportunity to purchase additional beer at the tour’s conclusion at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern\, a bar operating in the oldest standing tavern building in Philadelphia. Registration includes your a free tasting and beer at Independence Beer Garden. Beer at A Man Full of Trouble is available upon customer purchase. \nKnow Before You Go\n\nThe tour is just over one mile of walking on mostly flat terrain\, including a few paths with cobblestones. The walking portion of the tour is approximately 90 minutes. The path follows accessible sidewalks and will utilize curb cuts.\nThe tour will end at Man Full of Trouble Tavern\, where visitors can stay as long as they wish until closing time.\nBathrooms are available at the start and end of the tour.
