SUMMARY:Community Open House with Artist Tulu Bayar
DESCRIPTION:Lumen Printing Workshop with Tulu Bayar\nJoin artist and educator Tulu Bayar on July 11\, from 1:00–4:00 p.m.\, for an afternoon of creative experimentation with this captivating camera-less photographic process. \nThis free workshop will follow a drop in format\, but participants are encouraged to come earlier in the day\, as the prints take approximately 30 minutes to develop.  Participants are welcome to enjoy the museum while they wait for their prints. \nLumen Printing  \nLumen printing is an early photographic process that traces its origins to the nineteenth century. Unlike traditional photography\, it does not require a camera. Instead\, images are created by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive silver gelatin photographic paper and exposing them to sunlight. \nAs the paper reacts to light\, the objects block or filter the exposure\, producing delicate silhouettes and surprisingly rich colors. Every print is one of a kind\, shaped by the light\, the materials\, and the duration of the exposure. Natural materials such as leaves\, flowers\, grasses\, and feathers often produce especially beautiful results because of their varied textures and chemical properties\, but reflective objects can create equally compelling images. \nWhat to Expect \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a few flat or low-profile small objects that hold personal meaning and will fit within an 11 × 14 inch sheet of photographic paper. Pressed botanicals\, jewelry\, lace\, keys\, handwritten notes\, or other cherished keepsakes can all become part of a unique composition. Reflective materials such as glass or metal may produce especially unexpected and expressive effects. \nAbout Tulu Bayar \nTulu Bayar (she/her) is a Turkish-born visual artist and Professor of Art at Bucknell University. Her interdisciplinary\, lens-based work has been exhibited widely\, with recent solo shows at Strata Gallery (NM)\, Amos Eno Gallery (NYC)\, and Ferda Art Platform (Istanbul)\, often accompanied by exhibition catalogs. Her work is included in public collections such as the Elgiz Museum\, Samuel Dorsky Museum\, and the Textile Museum at GWU. Bayar has received awards from the Fulbright Program\, Puffin Foundation\, and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. She has participated in fully funded residencies at Ucross\, Foundation House\, VCCA\, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Reviews of her work have appeared in publications such as Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, and WhiteHot Magazine.  Tulu Bayer’s work is also featured in our current exhibit the Art of Free Assembly. \nSUPPORT PROVIDED BY \n  \n \n  \n

The group’s mission is to give a piece of Puerto Rican culture to Philly and the surrounding areas. Los Bomberos de la Calle is here to preserve\, educate and serve the community with this vibrant\, energetic and soulful music from Puerto Rico by collaborating with afterschool and in school programs as well as classes on the weekend for drumming and dancing. He is currently the drummer for SNACKTIME as well as Omar’s Hat. With SNACKTIME\, Marlow served as the house drummer for the pilot season of Late Night with Jason Kelce during the lead up to super bowl LIX. Before all of that\, Marlow toured the world with the legendary soul band\, The Stylistics. He’ll be joined by a duo of talented Philadelphia based musicians for a magical set in honoring the spirit and long tradition of jazz music in Philadelphia. \nBarakka (traditional Turkish music – acoustic)  |  5:15 pm – 6 pm \nBased in Philadelphia\, PA\, Barakka is a unique blend of Turkish Folk Rock and Anadolu Rock\, mixing eastern and western instrumentation pioneered by artists like Bariş Manço and Erkin Koray. Their specialized brand of music derives its unique sound from a melding of traditional Turkish music\, classic Middle Eastern music\, and the band’s own original songs. Led by Istanbul native singer/songwriter/guitarist\, Bariş Kaya\, this multi-ethnic group of seasoned musicians has been playing in the United States and Turkey for the better part of a decade\, and is currently working on their second album\, due for release later this year. \n  \n \nABOUT THE RED\, WHITE\, & BLUE TO-DO\nThe Philadelphia Historic District 250th Committee’s annual Red\, White\, & Blue To-Do celebration will take place on July 2\, 2025\, commemorating a day of “pomp and parade\,” as declared by John Adams in 1776\, encouraging visitors to celebrate independence in the place where it all began. \nThe celebration begins with museum and historic site openings and the Red\, White\, & Blue To-Do Pomp & Parade\, featuring 13 whimsical red wagon floats decked out with Philadelphia icons and patriotic flair along with parade groups such as drill teams\, cultural dance troupes\, and families representing the diversity of the city. As the parade ends\, more free fun ensues with the All-American Block Party\, produced in partnership with Wawa Welcome America\, on 3rd Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets\, where visitors can enjoy music\, games\, family-friendly activities\, highlights from Historic District attractions\, and food trucks and seating. The afternoon and evening will be filled with a carefully curated and culturally diverse lineup of free musical street performances at eight locations (doubled from last year!) throughout the Historic District\, festive happy hour specials throughout Old City\, and extended hours and special events at various historic sites into the evening.  \nThroughout the day\, Decoration Stations will be available at each of the Philadelphia Historic District attractions and partner organizations with festive gear for visitors to festoon themselves. Plus\, the District itself will get a boost of bunting\, balloons\, and begonias to enliven the holiday atmosphere. A special issue of the Historic Philadelphia Gazette will be available at the Independence Visitor Center and other partner attractions with a map and information about how to participate in the celebration all day long. In this hands-on workshop\, Word Powered exhibition artist Paul Travis Phillips invites you to explore that history in a surprising way: by using the pages of books to make your own mark. Traditionally\, books are tools used to transmit ideas into the minds of others. In this workshop\, you’ll reimagine your relationship to that tool—not as something to be read\, but as something to be handled\, altered\, and transformed. You’ll select a book that speaks to you\, then use its physical pages to create an original work of art. What does it mean to take a banned book and use it to create something new? To repurpose silenced pages into an expressive gesture? \nVisitors of all ages and skill levels are welcome to drop in and create between 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Recently\, she has focused on campaign signs\, deconstructing them and reconstructing the letters into new words and phrases. Learn more about Brenner Baird’s relationship with language and consider your own. Is there a word that holds power for you or one you think should be championed to the world? Using letters cut from political yard signs\, visitors of all ages can create a letter mash-up of their own “power word” to take home. \nPop-Up Artist Talk with Shelley Brenner Baird  |  12:30 pm – 1 pm \nAfter the workshop\, join us in the Word Powered exhibition gallery for a conversation with Shelley Brenner Baird as she discusses the inspiration and process behind her artworks “1st Amendment” and “Bad Dream.” \nCanvas of Courage: Painting the Path to Healing  |  1 pm – 3:30 pm \nLed by youth artist Kalie Mapp-Hayes of Kreate Your Kourage\, this dynamic workshop empowers children ages 6 to 18 to explore their emotions and creativity through the transformative power of art. Participants will create meaningful pieces that reflect their individual journeys\, building confidence\, emotional awareness\, and resilience along the way. With the guidance of skilled facilitators\, this workshop fosters self-expression and connection in a fun\, uplifting environment designed to inspire courage and creativity.
