SUMMARY:People\, Policy and Rethinking America’s Immigration Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Online tickets to this event are sold out. Limited walk-up tickets will be available at the door. First come\, first served.\nWith 100 days until the 2024 election\, immigration remains a top priority issue for voters. Record levels of migration to the United States in recent years have taxed an immigration system left nearly broken due to decades of congressional disputes and underinvestment. Sensational news coverage and partisan discourse about the border often conflates competing concerns over the rising tide of migrants displaced by climate change\, war and poverty\, national security\, and the state of the US economy\, leaving many of us to wonder: What exactly is happening at US borders and how can we make it better? Is there a way to preserve American interests and safely migrate potential new citizens into the country?  Inspired by powerful installations in our summer exhibition In Pursuit\, this dynamic discussion brings together a cross-perspective panel of scholars and experts to delve into the complexities of immigration policy and its multifaceted impact on our society. Panelists will separate fact from fiction around key issues such as border security\, placement of refugees\, and paths to citizenship\, and offer possible solutions and suggestions for reform.  \nBefore the panel discussion\, teachers\, educators\, and school faculty are invited to a free professional development session focused on Teaching Immigration through Historical and Contemporary Perspectives\, in collaboration with Sphere Education Initiatives.  \n$25 General Admission / $10 NLM or World Affairs Council Members / $5 Students\, Teachers\, or School Faculty (w. SUMMARY:Teaching Immigration through Historical and Contemporary Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This immersive and interactive workshop\, in collaboration with Sphere Education Initiatives\, offers tools and resources for teachers to engage in meaningful exploration of immigration issues with their students. Investigate and discuss artwork in the Museum’s exhibition In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation and engage with different perspectives and experiences of the immigration journey in the United States. Explore Sphere’s resources on immigration education\, including their Green Card Game\, an online experience that aims to educate Americans about the severe difficulties immigrants face in obtaining U.S. permanent residence. By simulating the legal immigration process with real rules and regulations\, the game highlights the time\, cost\, and unpredictable factors that make the system nearly impossible to navigate. Educators will dig into the historical and contemporary status of immigration in America and leave with a suite of resources to create a classroom environment that respects different backgrounds and perspectives and encourages informed discussions about immigration. \nThis professional development workshop is available to teachers\, school faculty\, and educators of all kinds. Following the workshop\, attendees are invited to stay for a panel discussion on People\, Policy\, and Rethinking America’s Immigration Landscape hosted at the National Liberty Museum. SUMMARY:Art Speaks: The Power of Art in Civic Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Convening a panel of internationally acclaimed artists featured in In Pursuit: Artists’ Perspectives on a Nation\, the National Liberty Museum presents a discussion on the power of art and freedom of expression. Moderator Stephanie Sparling Williams\, Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum\, will lead the discussion\, exploring the important role that art plays in liberal societies and the real tensions that emerge when artists engage in contemporary political and social movements. Hear directly from artists on how they maneuver in a challenging era of political polarization and around forces of social moderation and even censorship. Is art ever just… art? Or is the personal still political. \nPresented as part of Civic Season\, the panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A facilitated by Gen Z Civic Season Design Fellow Nsisong Udosen. \nThis event is online on Zoom. Virtual meeting information will be sent via email upon registration. \n  \nAbout Civic Season\nJuneteenth. July 4th. The 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. In Heroes from Comics to Reality\, students explore the characteristics of a hero\, identify real-life heroes throughout history and today\, and create their own superheroes to address the issues that matter to them. To celebrate Black History Month\, this demonstration and activity will focus on famous and lesser-known Black superheroes from comics and real-life Black heroes featured in the National Liberty Museum.  \nAcceptance\, Awareness\, Agency\, & Affirmation with The Bryson Institute of The Attic Youth Center | 5:30PM  \ndiscussion and mini training session  \nThrough the sharing of best practices\, resources\, and conversation\, this training will empower educators to create an inclusive environment in their classrooms\, acknowledging the intersectionality of their students’ identities. Attendees will learn how to equip their students with the knowledge and skills to be more accepting of different identities\, to be aware of how to treat their peers\, to have agency in defending who they are\, and to affirm the identities of themselves and their peers. The session will be led by Madelyn Morrison\, Director of The Bryson Institute of The Attic Youth Center\, which offers dynamic\, interactive\, and educational trainings around best practices for working with LGBTQ individuals.  \nFolk Arts and Education: Power in Partnerships with Philadelphia Folklore Project | 6:15PM  \ncurriculum discussion and Liberian folk art demonstration  \nLed by the Philadelphia Folklore Project (PFP) and affiliated artists\, this presentation discusses how incorporating folk arts into lesson plans can create more involved\, dynamic\, and memorable activities for students\, leading to better critical engagement. Folk arts-driven curricula create teaching and learning opportunities that allow both adults and children to draw on community cultural knowledge as resources for facing challenging issues and furnish educators with ability to meet the needs of diverse populations. PFP is a nationally recognized folk arts organization\, founded in 1987 to support vital and diverse living cultural heritages in urban communities by assisting artists who use folk art in service of social change. Folk arts and education partnerships is one of the key means in which they accomplish this\, as evidenced by their co-founding of the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS) in 2005.  \nSelf-Guided Tours of the NLM’s Signature Galleries and Featured Exhibitions | ongoing  \nGet exclusive access to all of our exhibit galleries and explore Strength & Fragility: The Story of the NLM\, Heroes from Around the World\, the inspiring Flame of Liberty by Dale Chihuly\, and our featured exhibitions Craftivism: Activism Through Craft and Deconstructing Bowie: Freedom in Eccentricity.  \nMeet & Greet with NLM Education Staff | ongoing  \nLearn about the museum’s school program offerings\, including virtual and on-site field trips for elementary through high school students and our long-standing\, year-long Young Heroes Outreach Program for students in grades 4-8.  \nPhiladelphia Music History Games & Activities | ongoing  \nTry your hand at arranging David Bowie’s most memorable moments in a timeline\, use your reasoning skills in a Philadelphia-centric game of High/Low\, and do your best to arrange some top albums from the city’s history.
