Heroes of Character Poster - Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun who continues to be internationally known as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1950 and ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying for more than 45 years. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa is featured in the Follow in My Footsteps portion of the exhibit, which allows participants to be photographed next to a Hero of Character. She embodies the virtues of Kindness and Compassion. Self-taught artist Jim Houser portrays the “images and noises which command his attention” in paintings and installations. He is known for combining cartoon-like images with poetry and painted objects on small canvases. His work has been shown in galleries around the world, including Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, Merry Karnowski Gallery in Los Angeles and Colette Gallery in Paris. He has been featured in two solo books: Babel: Jim Houser and The Letters: Portrait of an Artist, Jim Houser. He is based in Philadelphia.
