Outreach

The National Liberty Museum's new Heroes of Character Outreach Program is an innovative educational resource that addresses the negative behaviors and attitudes that disrupt learning and promote violence. It combines standards-based character education lessons with state-of-the-art computer interactives to teach young people the values and life skills that help them choose healthy ways to resolve conflicts and take responsibility for their own success... at school, at home and in their community.

The program is structured on a layered educational model that offers the following components for administrators, teachers, students, parents and caregivers:

Pre-visit ACT 48 Teacher Training Workshop

Participating teachers will receive 7.5 hours of Continuing Professional Development Credits at a workshop conducted at the National Liberty Museum.

Visits to your school to conduct in-class workshops with students

National Liberty Museum educators will come directly to your classroom with resources and activities to engage your students. The program offers you a choice of workshops, the number of classes participating and how many visits you will receive. The goals of the workshops are to:

  • promote knowledge of core values and positive social behaviors.
  • motivate students to make good decisions in their own life experiences.
  • generate actions that defuse bullying and violence, and encourage students to work cooperatively with others.

Class trip to the National Liberty Museum for a tour and extended workshop

Topics discussed in the classroom will be expanded with an educator-led tour of the Museum's galleries, including use of our interactive exhibits and introduction of our glass art collection as a metaphor for the fragility of freedom.

Access to our companion Heroes of Character website to involve parents and caregivers

When students use our Heroes of Character interactives they receive a personal "Hero Code" to continue the experience on-line. This is a perfect way to involve parents and caregivers in what they are learning. It also helps teachers continue these lessons in their classroom.

Short- and long-term evaluation tools for school administrators

National Liberty Museum educators will work with your school's administration to evaluate the impact of the program on your school environment and culture.
