Becoming Trauma Informed:
Stress, Trauma, and Violence on Student Learning
October 16 NEW!
Scientists now know that healthy brain development in children depends on safe, nurturing relationships with adults. Early experiences of trauma – abuse, neglect and exposure to violence and unremitting stress – can disrupt this important developmental process in serious ways. In this interactive workshop you will learn about how trauma effects brain development, how to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, even in very young students, and what you can do about it. You will leave with an understanding of what it means to be “trauma-informed” and how to create a trauma informed classroom where all your students can learn and thrive.

Teaching Diversity:
Multiculturalism as a Teaching Tool
October 16 NEW!
Today’s teachers must understand a variety of worldviews and maintain a full “toolbox” of cultural activities, games and exercises to engage multicultural students and make learning inclusive. Culture-friendly schools teach students about cultural shades, perceptions and blind spots. They use words and language that foster cultural discoveries and reduce cultural mistakes. In this hands-on workshop, teachers will learn how to create cohesive classrooms where individual differences lead to new discoveries, critical insights and helpful dialogs. Participants will acquire techniques for managing differences and learn how to help students develop cultural competencies that enrich education. Working with veteran educator, Linda Wallace, teachers will draw upon the abundant resources at the National Liberty Museum to develop a series of exercises and lessons that prepare students for global workplaces and communities.
